I wasn't going to write this. But I think I have to. Just know I am leaving out vital information for the protection of a child.
Soon after we arrived in Haiti, we were approached to help a child with disorder of sexual development. For those that do not understand, this child has genitals that appear male AND female.
I had no idea where to start. I tried one resource and really felt it was not going to happen.
Roger and I both prayed. I told The Lord if He would open a door for this child we would walk through it. I sent another email to people I did not really know. And God opened a door! I found that there is an organization of surgeons who travel the world doing surgery for the worlds poorest. They are called the Leap-Foundation. And they were coming to Haiti! So began a series of emails with the staff of Leap-Foundation which led to an evaluation for this child!
The evaluation took place on November 1 at a really neat place called Hopital Espoir (Hope Hospital). This hospital is run by an amazing Haitian woman, Gladys Thomas. She also oversees an orphanage, Village of Hope. I have not yet seen the inside of the average Haitian hospital, but I knew immediately this place is not average! I was very impressed. There were many children there for evaluations, some waiting for the team to arrive so surgery could begin. And everyone was treated with dignity and respect.
There is more! We met other missionaries who explained their ministry to us and offered assistance if we ever needed it. One lady told us all she does is arrange medical treatment in the states for the children who cannot be treated in Haiti. She finds sponsors, host families, arranges visas, passports and all other documentation needed. The only restriction is the child is not to stay in the states. They must be reunited in Haiti with their family. When God opens a door, wow!!
It was a long night at Hospital Espoir but worth every minute. And the best part? This special child will have surgery in April when Leap-Foundation returns to Haiti.
